Small Ruminant

SMALL RUMINENT BASED LIVELIHOOD

The small, marginal farmers and landless laborer in rural and tribal areas do rear goats and poultry as side activity but they do not look at it as additional or supportive income of the family because of many reasons. Demand in the market for desi poultry eggs as also goat meat is increasing at one level but the farmers do not get good returns at another. It has been observed that minimum aspects of goat rearing and poultry are not given adequate attention and so the returns are less as expected.
YRA initiated this intervention as Small Ruminant Based Livelihood in Ramtek block of Nagpur district that covers very critical and important aspects such as minimum requirements of nutritious food, vaccination against their main illness, local breeding, castration and their maintenance such as water, night shelter necessity etc. Ten local youth as Community Resource Persons (CRP) were selected and trained in all these technical aspects, who then provided doorstep services to the farmers on minimal payments. This training was given by retired veterinary doctors. YRA in the first lot provided these services to 1000 families through trained CRPs. As an effect each family with average 5 goats earned minimum Rs. 15000/ to 22000 per annum plus the CRPs also earned money against their door-step services. The same model YRA expanded in the same block.

Appeal:

Now YRA wish to expand in other districts such as Amaravati, Bhandara, Washim and Akola. For this YRA has done MoU with The Goat Trust for technical and scientific support and we are seeking funding support from Government, CSR and other donors. This will help increasing family income of thousands of poor rural and tribal households.
