Electricity alone is not enough to improve economic growth, but it generates substantial benefits, including the promotion of production, better health and education. However, some factors such as low population density, challenging terrain and low consumption, amongst others, make rural electrification substantially more costly to develop than urban schemes. Historically, this has been the reason for low electrification rates in rural areas of most developing countries. Most people living in rural areas still have no access to electricity. Having no access to electricity, rural areas use kerosene lamps at night for indoor lighting and for undertaking urgent family tasks outside the home. The schools do not get a proper supply of electricity at times, and this forces them to cancel school activities or special classes. The farmers cannot use water pumps in the evening due to power cuts, due to which they have to manually water their plants following which insects and pests attack their crops leading to a bad harvest.
YRA aims to improve the lives of the poor through renewable energy and bring about a revolution by replacing kerosene lamps with energy-efficient solar lamps, solar lanterns and solar flashlights.
